About Me:
I’m a researcher from Livingston in Scotland. I love reading fantasy novels and journalling.

I love reading fantasy novels. My favourite authors are Terry Pratchett (Discworld series) and Diana Wynne Jones (Crestomanci series and Howl’s Moving Castle).
I also really like journalling— especially using lots of stickers. I have more notebooks that I can count.

One of the projects I’m working on is investigating if we can use artificial intelligence to build a database of stroke research.
Stroke is a life-threatening condition where blood is cut off from the brain. There aren’t many treatments so scientists are working hard to discover new treatments.
By building a database of experiments testing different treatments, we can see all the results in one place and work out which ones might be best to use in patients.
But so much research is produced all the time that it’s hard to keep up with. We can’t add new experimental results to the database ourselves — we need to get a computer to do it instead.
Artificial intelligence involves getting computers to think like humans. In my case, I can train a computer to ‘read’ reports of experiments and output information like what methods were used and how much we can trust the evidence.

My Typical Day:
I work from home most days and go into the office once a week. I do a mix of coding, data analysis, and writing.

I like to spend the mornings coding. I use coding and computer science to do a lot of things like analysing data and creating graphs. I also use code to develop artificial intelligence programs, which can do things like read and categorise text.
In the afternoon, I like to write. Depending on what stage of a project I’m at, I might be writing a plan for a new project, making notes about my methods, or writing up my final results.
When I’m in the office, I have a lot of meetings. Some of these are face-to-face with other scientists who work in the same office as me, but some are online with scientists from around the world.
