I work in digital security and for me it’s when I see people I’ve helped do something for themselves where they have previously relied on me as an “expert” to do it for them or tell them how to. That can be as basic as someone not falling for a phishing e-mail, and then reporting it; it can be more complex, like someone procuring a service asking their supplier some relevant security questions and factoring that into their purchasing decision. I guess it’s when I’ve helped someone understand an issue well enough to manage it, in their context, without needing me any more! The paradox is that the harder I try to help people do without me, the more they keep coming back. 🙂

This a really good question. I am early in my career and there are things which big CV accomplishments but they don’t necessarily top of what I am most proud of. There are two things that come to mind: The first which is directly associated with my work, is when I have written a piece of code, it works and someone else is able to use it. The other thing was my outreach work, I set up an after school science club in three schools which didn’t have the resources to run them themselves, unfortunately, that’s been put on pause during these times, but I was really proud of getting that going and making sure it would continue after I left.

I conduct research called systematic reviews, which identity, evaluate and summarise the findings of all the published research in an entire field of research. Due to a lot of labs being closed, a lot more scientists have been conducting their first systematic reviews these past few months and it’s been my job to help them.
I specialise in systematic review of in vitro data (data from cell experiments), which is a relatively new type of systematic review and requires different methods from conducting systematic reviews of animal or clinical data, so I’ve been helping a lot of people with that. It’s incredibly weird because I’m really early in my career and I’ve got professors asking *me* for help, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of myself.

Certainly the most thrilling thing I have ever done was to write the software that enabled a satellite just launched into space to video its first few minutes in space. It wasn’t an easy task to perform as many things have to go absolutely right and work perfectly together to capture the video. It was a one time opportunity which my company had not attempted before. The data for this video came down over several days so we waited with great expectation. When the complete video was put together and we watched the footage we were not disappointed as video was spectacular. We had been very lucky because a satellite just separated from the rocket tumbles quite freely until it is brought under control – so it could have been pointing in any direction. In this instance the satellite scanned across from the complete darkness of space to move across the lower hemisphere and continue on past capturing other satellites just launched as it so.
